Calgary Kangaroos Australian Football Club

We are the Calgary Kangaroos.

No, it’s not rugby.

Our mission is to grow, promote, and develop the sport of Australian football in Calgary.

We are a group of people passionate about sport, and we exercise that passion through playing Australian football in our social senior men’s league and a competitive senior men’s team.

What is aussie rules football?

Aussie rules, often referred to as footy, is like soccer played with something like a rugby shaped ball, where players have to pass the ball by kicking it or punching it, and it all starts with the ball being thrown in the air like a basketball tip-off. Tom Willis really had a creative mind back in 1858! Check out the video below for an explanation of our sport!

No matter what your skill level or experience, you're welcome at the Kangaroos! We also accept registrants of all nationalities, be that Canadian, Australian, Irish, Kiwi, British; everyone is welcome. Around 50% of our club is made up of Canadian newcomers to the sport. We welcome everyone, regardless of skill, gender, age, body type, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. Come out for a kick!

No experience needed

We understand that most Canadians may not have even seen the sport of Australian rules football played before. The Kangaroos are dedicated to introducing newcomers to the most important skills required to play Aussie rules. Our team and coaches are friendly and always happy to show a new player the fundamentals of the sport.

Low cost

Everybody is welcome to come out and try footy completely free!

No unique equipment required

Unlike most sports, where you have to supply all your own (often expensive) equipment, Aussie rules requires no special gear. The only thing you will require are runners (for the indoor sessions), soccer cleats for the outdoor sessions, and a mouth guard for the tournaments. The Calgary Kangaroos will supply all other equipment, such as game-day uniforms and balls.

Skills

Through our early season indoor trainings, and our season-long outdoor trainings, you will learn all the fundamentals of Australian rules, including kicking, hand balling and tackling. You'll also cover rules and tactics, helping you to become an integral part of the Calgary Kangaroos.

Season schedule

We start our season with a series of free indoors trainings where we teach newcomers the basics of footy, and shake off any rust that’s built up over the winter. Once the ground thaws, we head outdoors and practice throughout the summer at AE Cross school every Wednesday evening.

The first sessions are dedicated beginner sessions held indoors. When we’re able to get outside we split into either the Cowboys or the Bears. These teams are the “inter-squad” teams underneath the Kangaroos banner. The Cowboys and Bears play a five to seven game series from mid-May until early-October with the winners being crowned Metro League Champions. These games are typically played on Saturdays or Wednesdays.

Matches against fellow AFL Canada member clubs are spread throughout the year and are welcome to all players. Our first big match is the annual Bow Valley 10s match against the Banff Bisons in May. In June we’ll travel to Kelowna for a footy festival with Edmonton, Burnaby, Whistler, and Vancouver. Our home match is the Stampede Cup, which takes place the first Saturday of July. In September we travel north to Edmonton for the Capital Cup, and finally in October we’ll travel south to compete in the USAFL Nationals tournament.
